Preventing Fraud and Arson

Preventing Fraud and Arson

We believe in the promise of protection.

Trust. It’s the cornerstone of what we do at Grinnell Mutual. We make it our priority to protect and pilot you through life’s peaks and valleys.

Insurance fraud and arson not only cost the average U.S. family hundreds of dollars in premium increases every year, they can ruin — and sometimes even take — lives.

What is insurance fraud?

In a nutshell, fraud is engaging in a deceptive practice with the intention of financial or personal gain. These practices affect all areas of insurance and include:

  • Claims for theft that never happened
  • Inflated or padded claims
  • Misreporting or omitting information about an accident
  • Inflated prices from suppliers
  • Arson (deliberate property-fire setting)
  • Staged accidents

The good news? You can help.

Report fraud and arson

If you suspect fraud or arson, report it to local law enforcement. Next, call your insurance agent or company or the state insurance department.

Anyone can call Grinnell Mutual's Fraud and Compliance hotline at 855-467-2372. Our Fraud and Arson Award program provides up to $10,000 for providing timely and credible information about a fraudulent or criminal loss to people or property insured by Grinnell Mutual or its affiliated farm mutuals. Prevent arson

You can help prevent arson. Here are a few tips to consider:

  • Light building exteriors and entrances.
  • Use properly installed deadbolt locks on exterior doors.
  • If you notice suspicious activity, notify the police immediately.
  • Board up vacant or abandoned buildings.
  • Promote neighborhood watches and keep an eye out for problems in your neighborhood.
