Grinnell Mutual holds ribbon-cutting ceremony for onsite clinic

In a special ribbon-cutting event on March 4, Grinnell Mutual unveiled its new onsite Health Matters Clinic for employees. Clinic services are available with no co-pay to all Grinnell Mutual employees as well as to dependents on the company’s health plan.

“Through an innovative partnership with the Grinnell medical community, we are making it easier for employees to attend to their health,” said President and CEO Larry Jansen. “We know that access to health care for education, advice, and routine health management can be restricted due to provider office hours and employee work and family schedules. This program should remove some of those barriers and thus assist not only the patient/employee in achieving better health, but also assist their regular provider in care management.  Employees will maintain their ‘medical home’ with their regular medical providers; the Health Matters clinic staff will attend to unexpected daily health issues that occur while at work, needed medical education, assistance with medication protocols and monitoring of prescribed treatments, disease management, and wellness management to more effectively assure compliance with health recommendations and enhance the overall health of each employee who chooses to use the service.”

"The Health Matters Clinic is partnering with local providers and serving as an adjunct to care employees already receive,” said Julie Augustine, health and safety manager at Grinnell Mutual. “If people don’t have a provider, we can fill that need or work with them to find a local provider.”

Surgical Associates, LLP, of Grinnell has been contracted to provide services at the new clinic from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday.  Kasey Herbers, PA-C, will provide urgent care while Stefanie Noun, PA-C and Bridget Baechtel, LISW, will continue leading the health and stress management program. Dr. David Coster will oversee the clinic services.

“Our goal for the clinic is to provide convenient, same-day access to excellent care,” said Herbers. “We also hope to serve people who haven’t yet engaged in the health care system through preventive services.”

Services offered at the clinic include:
• General sick call, first aid, and urgent care
• One-on-one counseling for management of chronic diseases
• Allergy shots, blood pressure, blood sugar monitoring and other routine health maintenance
• Treatment of non-work related injuries
• Educational/training programs
• Preventive screenings
• Stress management groups

“We are very excited. As the only insurance company in the state of Iowa to offer an onsite clinic, we’re a trendsetter,” said Augustine.  “Everything is coming together at the right time to make this collaboration work. We self-insure our health care plan and pay all of our own claims, which gives our program flexibility. In addition, we have a forward-thinking board of directors.  In Grinnell, we also have great health resources, including a good hospital, plus a great vendor to serve at our clinic.”

The new clinic is named for the innovative Health Matters program that Grinnell Mutual began last year through a partnership with Surgical Associates.  The voluntary program provides employees with an opportunity to take charge of their health, particularly chronic conditions and stress management, with the guidance and support of health care professionals.

“Health Matters received an overwhelming response from our employees, and we’ve already begun to see reduced health claims from employees involved in those programs,” said Augustine.  “The new clinic is a win-win.  It’s a great benefit for our employees and Grinnell Mutual expects to see tremendous savings in health care costs.”

The Health Matters Clinic is housed in the Keeney building on the northeast corner of the Grinnell Mutual campus.  Formerly used as training labs, the building has been remodeled to accommodate the new clinic and meeting space for the Health Matters stress management programs.  The final phase of the remodeling, scheduled for completion this summer, will include the Keeney Fitness Center.
